How Long Does Shock Wave Therapy Take To Work?

Apr. 11, 2023

Having chronic pain can have a huge impact on your quality of life. Chronic pain can limit your mobility, prevent you from doing the things you love, make you tired and irritable, and negatively affect your relationships. Unfortunately, traditional medication pain management is not an effective long-term pain solution. But you should know that you have another option for managing your chronic pain.

What is shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy or extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is an innovative, cost-effective, evidence-based treatment for tendon pain (often called tendonitis or tendinopathy) and other conditions throughout the body. Ex vivo means outside the body.

The primary benefits of shockwave are pain relief and restoration of function. Shockwave therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for a range of common tendon conditions, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy and tennis elbow.

Shockwave therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment with convincing evidence of effectiveness from numerous studies and clinical trials. There are now multiple randomized, double-blind clinical trials supporting the use of shock wave therapy for plantar fasciitis, lateral epicondylitis, and calcific tendonitis of the shoulder.

How long does shockwave therapy take to work?

As a manual treatment, it may take some time for the results of shockwave therapy to become apparent. While some patients report immediate pain relief after treatment, others may take several weeks to experience significant pain relief.

Explaining outcome expectations

Why is there such a significant difference? There are several reasons why some patients may feel results sooner than others, such as the area being treated, the level of pain felt, the age of the patient, and the sensitivity of the patient's pain receptor nerves. With this treatment, pain neurotransmitters are disrupted and pain nerves are overstimulated, which essentially numbs the nerves to convey the sensation of pain. The two outcome stages that most patients experience include

Initial Results

The initial result for many patients is numbness in the treated area. Your initial result is usually a temporary response to the treatment, meaning your pain will diminish, but will not go away for the next few weeks. Your initial results will relieve your worst pain.

Final results

The results of this treatment will continue to improve over several weeks. About 8 to 12 weeks after treatment, you can expect maximum results in terms of freedom from chronic pain that affects your mobility and overall health in your daily life.

Why does it take time for results to show?

Results may take time to show up because the results of the treatment are progressive. This treatment uses sound waves to disrupt the transmission of pain neurotransmitters in the body, which means that the sound energy works on a molecular level to rearrange and correct your body's interpretation of pain. For this reason, it takes several weeks to realize the full potential of the treatment.

Depending on the severity of your pain and the number of areas treated, it may take less time to see results; by the same token, if you have more severe chronic pain, you may need a second treatment after 16 weeks to achieve optimal results. For some patients, it may take up to a year of treatment, usually 3 to 6 treatments, to get the best results.

How long do the results last?

The results of this treatment are long-lasting and can produce results for months or even more than a year at a time. The length of time your results last depends on the therapeutic effect of the treatment and your body's natural response to the treatment.

For patients treated primarily for pain, results will depend on how your body responds to hyperstimulation or numbing of nerve receptors. Each patient's response to hyperstimulation is slightly different, which means that even if they all receive the same treatment, one patient's results may differ from another.

How many treatments do you need?

Whether you need one treatment or more than three, the number of treatments needed to achieve optimal results depends on the problem being treated and the severity of the problem. It is important to note that this treatment is incredibly versatile and can be used to treat many health problems in addition to chronic pain, including scar tissue, cellulite, bursitis, and erectile dysfunction. The number of treatments you can expect usually falls into several categories.

For pain and injury

For pain, it usually takes one or two treatments to get the best pain-free results. Your treatments may be scheduled once a year to maintain results, or once or twice throughout the year. We will help you determine how often you should receive pain management treatments. For injuries such as stress fractures, one treatment may be enough to achieve results.

Rejuvenation

For rejuvenation, such as smoothing the appearance of cellulite, one treatment is usually effective enough to produce the desired results over a long period of time. If you are interested in using this treatment for cosmetic purposes, please discuss it in depth with us during your consultation.

For erectile dysfunction

This treatment is also used for erectile dysfunction and may require three to six treatments to produce the desired results. If you are seeking ED treatment, please be prepared to answer all symptom-related questions during your consultation.

Will this treatment be helpful for everyone?
